Paramedic Position Overview

Working as a member of emergency medical team, paramedic administers medical treatment to and transports sick and/or injured persons to medical facility.

 

Examples of Duties

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties are not inclusive of all responsibilities and the incumbent may perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor In-Charge:

  • Performs basic and advanced life support treatment and transport of ill or injured patients.
  • Participates in the delivery of emergency and routine patient care.
  • Responds to instructions from emergency medical dispatcher and drives specially equipped emergency vehicle to specified location.
  • Monitors communication equipment to maintain contact with dispatcher.
  • Works under the direction of the In-Charge in regards to patient care.
  • Promotes positive customer relations in dealing with patients, visitors, and other employees.
  • Maintains station in an orderly and clean fashion.
  • Removes or assists in removal of victims from scene of accident or catastrophe.
  • Communicates with professional medical personnel at emergency treatment facility to obtain instructions regarding further treatment and to arrange for reception of victims at treatment facility.
  • Assists in maintaining the patient compartments of the vehicles to assure that the vehicle is street ready.
  • Assists in removal of victims from vehicle and transfer of victims to treatment centre.
  • Assists treatment centre admitting personnel to obtain and record information related to victims’ vital statistics and circumstances of emergency.
  • Maintains vehicles and medical and communication equipment and replenishes first aid equipment and supplies.
  • Maintains a safe working environment for personnel, as well as working to maintain a safe fleet of ambulances.
  • Reports vehicle and equipment malfunctions to the appropriate personnel.
  • Assists in other duties as needed and directed.

 

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor of Paramedicine

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Australian paramedic registration
  • Australian drivers’ licence (unrestricted)
  • ALS certification of willingness to obtain
  • Australian Citizenship

Supplemental Information

COMPUTER SKILLS
Moderate word processing, database, and spreadsheet skills required.
Basic Email and internet skills required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyse, and interpret general medical periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of trainees, managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

INTERPERSONAL
Demonstrates effective customer service and project management skills. Documentation of Conflict Resolution and Diversity Training preferred.
